Having appeared in numerous productions on stage in\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">his native Copenhagen, he made his feature debut\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"\">starring in Ole Bornedal\u2019s 1994 indie hit,\u00a0<i class=\"\">Nightwatch<\/i>.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Thomsen has worked with many acclaimed directors world wide, and is one of Europe\u2019s most sought after actors, starring in almost 100 productions.\u00a0 <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">He was first introduced internationally for his leading role as a member of Denmark\u2019s most dysfunctional family in Thomas Vinterberg\u2019s 1998 arthouse hit <i class=\"\">Festen <\/i>(<i class=\"\">The Celebration<\/i>) for which he received his first Best European Actor nomination at the European Film Academy Awards. The film won the Cannes Jury Prize among many others and cemented\u00a0 the impact of the Dogma era in filmmaking history.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Thomsen has consistently garnered international critical acclaim in numerous European films including, <i class=\"\">The Greatest Heroes, The Inheritance, Brothers, Adam\u2019s Apples, Allegro, Fear Me Not\u00a0<\/i>and <i class=\"\">In a Better World<\/i>. Among his many accolades, he was presented with the Best Actor award by the Danish Film Academy as well as receiving a variety of international awards for <i class=\"\">Greatest Heroes, Adam\u2019s Apples<\/i>, <i class=\"\">The Inheritance <\/i>and<i class=\"\"> Fear Me Not<\/i>.\u00a0 For his performance in <i class=\"\">Brothers<\/i>, he received his second Best European Actor nomination and won the prestigious Best Actor award at the San Sebastian Film Festival.<\/span><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">Thomsen\u2019s international feature films include the box office smash <i class=\"\">Bond: The World is Not Enough<\/i>, Kathryn Bigelow\u2019s <i class=\"\">The Weight of Water<\/i>, Menno Meyjes\u2019 <i class=\"\">Max<\/i>, Chen Kaige\u2019s <i class=\"\">Killing Me Softly, <\/i>Ridley Scott\u2019s <i class=\"\">Kingdom of Heaven <\/i>and Tom Tykwer\u2019s <i class=\"\">The International<\/i>.\u00a0 He also starred in the 1999 Academy Award\u00ae winning short film, <i class=\"\">Election Night<\/i>.\u00a0 Thomsen\u2019s addition\u00a0international feature credits include<i class=\"\"> The Rocket Post, The Zookeeper, Blue Print, Mostly Martha, Opium, Hitman, Duplicity, Tell Tale, Centurion, Season of the Witch, The Thing,\u00a0<\/i><i class=\"\">The Silence, Mortdecai <\/i>and star Hungarian director Janos Szasz\u2019s <i class=\"\">The Notebook<\/i><span class=\"\">.\u00a0<\/span>Thomsen joined two Danish feature film in the autumn of 2014. First <i class=\"\">Summer\u00a092\u00a0<\/i>by Kasper Barfoed and later<i class=\"\">\u00a0The Commune\u00a0<\/i>by Festen star director, Thomas Vinterberg.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\"><i class=\"\">\u00a0<\/i><\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">On television, Thomsen guest starred on the hit series <i class=\"\">Alias<\/i>, in the BBC miniseries, <i class=\"\">The Virgin Queen<\/i> and in the TNT Miniseries <i class=\"\">The Company<\/i>, produced by Ridley Scott and directed by Mikael Salomon.<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">In 2012 Ulrich Thomsen joined the cast of the True Blood-creator Alan Ball\u2019s new tv-series <i class=\"\">Banshee <\/i>for Cinemax, that ran for four seasons. Other TV appearances include, <em>The Blacklist<\/em> with James Spader, <em>Counterpart<\/em> with JK Simmons. The prestigious <em>The New Pope<\/em> directed by Oscar winner Paolo Sorrentino, starring opposite Jude Law and John Malkovich. <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">\u00a0<\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">In 2016 Ulrich Thomsen made his first directorial debut as a writer, director and producer with <i class=\"\">In Embryo.<\/i> A gritty love story new beginnings. <i class=\"\">In Embryo<\/i> world premiered in Official Selection at the prestigious 2016 Shanghai International Film Festival. <\/span><\/div>\n<div class=\"\"><span class=\"\">His 2019 second featurefilm <em>GUTTERBEE<\/em>\u00a0is a satirical black comedy that deals with identity, sausages, and the American dream. \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Ulrich Thomsen (born December 6, 1963) graduated from the Danish National School of Theatre and Contemporary Dance in 1993.
